Key Ingredients for Oily Skin

Hey Babes,

It is finally happening!  I have a post dedicated for my babes with oily skin.  And this post is long overdue!  I took my time; researched extensively to make sure I provide quality and accurate content.  And there’s an abundant amount of information, good and bad, on oily skin.  What is oily skin?  Oily skin is the overproduction of sebum from sebaceous glands.  The oil producing glands are attached to hair follicles and release sebum, a fatty substance, to the surface of the skin.  The glands produce the oil to keep the skin moisturized.  Unfortunately, the oil can clog pores and lead to acne, blackheads, and whiteheads.  Cleaning and moisturizing your face daily are important; however, many already know to include that in their skincare routines.  When it comes down to ingredients to look for in skincare products, it’s not as easy as knowing to wash your face.  Looking for skincare ingredients that can aide in a specific skincare routine can be hard, but I am here to help.  Here are some key ingredients to look for when shopping for oily/combination skin.

  • Non-Comedogenic

Non-comedogenic products are formulated to rarely cause acne breakouts and pore blockage.  The non-comedogenic ingredients work to keep the skin clear of acne.  Comedogenic products are not necessarily bad.  On the other hand, comedogenic products are better for people with dry skin or people not prone to acne breakouts.

  • Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B-3.  The essential nutrient helps build proteins in the skin and retain moisture to prevent damage.  Also, niacinamide reduces inflammation, and eases redness from eczema, acne, and other skin conditions.  This benefits oily skin by regulating oil and minimize acne breakouts.

  • Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl Peroxide is a well-known chemical compound that oxidizes on the skin, which can help with acne.  Benzoyl Peroxide gets rid of bacteria and dead skin that can clog the pores.  It also works as an exfoliant; benzoyl peroxide gently debrides the surface layer of skin.  This ingredient works well for all types of acne, especially if the person suffers from inflammatory skin conditions.

  • Sulfur

Sulfur is a natural element that works similarly to benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.  It dries out the skin and absorbs the excess oil on the surface of the skin.  The difference is Sulfur is gentler than benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.  Sulfur works for mild acne including blackheads and whiteheads.  If you have sensitive skin, it is best to use sulfur to get rid of blackheads and whiteheads.

  • Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that dissolves sebum that clogs pores.  It also helps inflamed pimples go away faster.  Salicylic acid is also considered as a keratolytic medication which is a good exfoliant.  Salicylic acid loosens and breaks apart attachments between cells in the outer layer of the skin.  This encourages exfoliation of skin and unclogging of pores.  If you suffer from blackheads, whiteheads, moderate acne, and redness, salicylic acid would be best to use.

And that is some of the best ingredients for oily skin.  These ingredients do come with side effects such as irritations, drying of the skin, and smell.  Do not overuse any of the ingredients without permission from your dermatologist.  I hope that this helped my oily skin babes! Let me know about your experience with any of these ingredients or other ingredients that helped you.  Don’t forget to like, share, and comment on this post.  Also, follow me on all my social media and my YouTube Channel.

Review: Dove Re-Styling Milk

Hey Babes,

It’s great to be back! Life is in a repetitive stage and I am exhausted.  Summer consists of three months and I did not have a “Hot Girl Summer” liked I planned to do this year.  I wanted to go on trips, have a daily activity, meditate, post more blogs, and take control of my life.  Now we are in August and time is running away from me.  I don’t appreciate it.  Summer is one of my favorite seasons; I need more summertime.  Some of the reasons I love about summer is the way nature blossoms; more people come together to inspire; fashion is dramatic yet light; and its not freezing cold outside.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of mosquitos; the smell of trash that sits out the street too long (if you’re not from the city, you’re blessed); people playing with fireworks every night; and the excruciating heat, but Summer is the best season.

Another reason is the amount of hair products that come out.  Most companies release hair products that prevent frizz, seal in moisture, and define the curl.  I have tried an abundant amount of hair products and not many of them worked.  Luckily, I was chosen to review Dove’s new Between Washes Re-Styling Milk for the company’s new campaign.  Dove and Influenster sent me the complimentary product; I was excited to try it.  I did review the product on my social medias already, but I wanted my blog readers to also know about the product.

The packaging was standard.  The item came with a card with instructions and the benefits of the product.  The 6.8 oz. bottle was wrapped in oatmeal white tissue paper.  After opening the product, I sprayed three times to get a decent amount.  The consistency is creamy and light.  I followed the instructions and ran the re-styling milk through a piece of my hair.  I scrunched my hair at the ends to add texture as the card instructed.    After a few minutes, my hair did curl.  After the first try, I applied the milk on half of my hair.  The half without the product felt dry and looked dryer.  My hair resembled the broom of the wicked witch.  The half with product felt soft, smelled soft, and looked soft.  It was a miracle! Finally, a product I need in my life.  Dove’s re-styling milk worked like a charm.  It worked for 30 minutes.  After a half an hour, my hair turned into a big fur ball.

I wasn’t surprised, but I did want the product to prove me wrong.  My hair was still soft, but my curl was nonexistent.  Dove’s Between Washes Re-Styling Milk did its job for a short time.  I would rate the product four out of five stars.  It needs improvement, but it was a decent execution.  If you want shorter reviews on products, follow my Influester – @kenmonet.

Review: Beauty Shield Massaging Overnight Recovery Cream

Hey Babes,

Summer is coming to an end with August being the last month of summer vacation.  The leaves are changing colors and the wind is biting at our skin.  Summer is not over, but the weather change is affecting my face.  As you all know, my skin is dryer than hair damaged by heat for over ten years.  My day skincare routine has saved my skin from the harsh sun, however, my skin still felt dry when waking up.  I knew I needed to change something else – my nighttime routine.

My night routine didn’t change much from my previous routine post.  On the other hand, I did not replace most of the products I used after I finished the bottle.  Stupidly, I thought she (my skin) would act accordingly during the midnight hours.  That didn’t happen.  I was faced with a dilemma; how do I repair my skin when I’m not awake?  I didn’t know where to start, honestly.  The first thing I thought to do was to look for ingredients that help with repairing the skin.  Skin is important to me and I do research the ingredients of the products I use.  It is important to me to align myself with companies that are ethical and socially responsible.  I researched about a few companies and I saw an interesting product – the E.L.F. Beauty Shield Massaging Overnight Recovery Cream.

E.L.F. is an affordable drug store makeup company that is sold in many stores such as Target, Ulta Beauty, Walgreens, CVS, and E.L.F. cosmetic stores.  I purchased the massaging cream at Target for $14 plus tax.  The ingredients, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene; Cetyl Alcohol; Vitamin C; Pomegranate oil; and Carrot oil, sold me on the product.  Hydrogenated Polyisobutene is a polymer that thickens the oils in cosmetic products which creates a softer and smoother look.  Cetyl Alcohol is a non-drying alcohol that holds the ingredients together.  Vitamin C, pomegranate oil, and carrot oil are antioxidants that nourish the skin; brighten dark spots; and repair damaged skin.  These ingredients were solutions to the issues I had with my skin.

After my first use with the recovery overnight cream, the consistency caught my attention.  I noticed the cream did not completely sink into the skin.  With the massager alone, my skin did not absorb the product.  I massaged the rest of the product into my skin with my fingers.  The substance didn’t feel sticky or greasy; it felt better on my face after I put it in the refrigerator for two minutes.

The morning after, my face felt moisturized.  My appearance wasn’t affected immediately, however, my face did feel smoother.  After a few weeks of use, the massaging overnight recovery cream became a favorite.  Rolling the massaging beads on my face feels relaxing, especially after a rough day.  The cream works best on a fresh, clean face so I use the Beauty Shield product after applying my Vitamin C toner from BreedLove Beauty Co.  I noticed my skin felt nourished and hydrated in the morning. The bumps and ridges of my skin felt smoother and less visible. I like the product thus far and recommend it for people with minor skin damage.  If you want shorter reviews on products, follow my Influester – @kenmonet.
